Inspiration

My plan was always to have something to do with barbie but my recent interest with world vision made me think about something to do with poverty and when I searched some poverty images these paintings came u. I have also looked at some pictures by Don Warren who is the photographer for world vision.

Concept

This year I want my painting to be about barbie and poverty. Very different things right? thats the point. I want to expand on the fact that barbie ( which represents a more well off and portrayed as beautiful woman ) is not satisfied with herself and the things she has but yet the starving people that are burdened with poverty make the most of what they have and cherish it. Barbie is always smiling but its a very fake smile. yet The people that are starving have the most beautiful true smiles. I want to somehow expand on the fact that we come into this world the same way but we arent born with the same opportunities. And we are the same once we gone but when an african baby dies before they are 10 from the effects of poverty and most of the time probably wouldnt even get a funeral it doesnt mean as much as it would if a young girl dies in a 1st world country.

There are over 18,000 kids that die from the effects of poverty each day.

Trompe l'oeil

Trompe l’oeil, meaning “deceive the eye” in French, is an art technique which uses realistic imagery to create the illusion that something exists in three dimensions. It is very difficult to paint as it requires a meticulous attention to detail. The sizing, light, use of shadows, and every detail must be near if not perfect in order to make the tro-dimensional piece to appear three dimensional. A particular form of Trompe l’oeil called di sotto in su was first used by the Italians where they would paint on the ceiling to give the illusions of greater space. It is also used in stage theatre set design to make the stage look bigger than it actually is. Something that helped me understand the concept a lot more was the Looney Tunes. Coyote paints a tunnel on a wall to trick the Road Runner into running into it but he actually goes straight through it, Coyote goes to chase after him but instead hits his own Trompe l’oeil. “The Crevasse” a Painting by celebrated German man Edgar Mullar took fave days and took up a massive 820 square feet of ground. Another interesting fact about Trompe l’oeil:
‘A version of an oft-told ancient Greek story concerns a contest between two renowned painters. Zeuxis (born around 464 BC) produced a still life painting so convincing that birds flew down to peck at the painted grapes. A rival, Parrhasius, asked Zeuxis to judge one of his paintings that was behind a pair of tattered curtains in his study. Parrhasius asked Zeuxis to pull back the curtains, but when Zeuxis tried, he could not, as the curtains were Parrhasius's painting—making Parrhasius the winner.’- Wikipedia.

Guerilla Art

Guerilla Art first emerged in the UK but soon spread to most other countries. In The United States it is referred to as post-graffiti art as guerilla owes much to the early graffiti movement. The main focus is on the cause and effect of the work, although it also has no one motivation and can be just for fun, to make a political statement, or even sharing ideas. It can also be known as street art but is not just done by spray paint and it is commonly left anonymously in public places. The Jamaica Pond Bench in Boston was created by artist Matthew Hincmen in 2006. After taking city officials over a week to notice it they removed it, but by 2009 it was installed permanently after a long battle to get it approved.

‘Ice Penguins’ is a display in a public square in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It is catching the eye of plenty of people and I particularly really understand what it’s about.  The population on Antarctic emperor penguins has decreased by 50 percent over the last 50 years and this is due to global warming. This piece really connects with what Guerilla art is about, its something so simple yet it has so much  meaning to it.
